Just Keep Digging
A lot can happen in the span of a century. We now have pocket sized calculators at our disposal at all times (this Im particularly thankful for). Washing and drying of laundry is at a click of a button and I even have a robot sweeping my floors for me! But a lot can change too and as our world becomes more convenient, there are some things that can also be lost.
Plants and growing were as common of a knowledge to our ancestors as cooking. It came hand in hand and a necessary tool to enhance their life. This skill was passed on to generations to follow as they led by example and hard work along side their loved ones.
Work out of the home and the grocery store for all your food concept, made for an eventual loss in the simple skill of how to grow something. A plant now might come from a store or not at all. How to keep a potted annual flower alive has become foreign.
But here’s the thing, nothing is truly “lost” but instead changed. Now more than ever, we can tap into so many resources to learn what we need to grow, maintain and enjoy the plants that we want. A quick video or a social media platform can give us inspiration and help us preserve the fruits of our labor. The questions we might need answered? Right there at our finger tips.
While the knowledge might feel lost and you aren’t sure where to begin, Im here to tell you that first step, just get digging! The information you need is there for when questions arise. Knowing that will a failure, comes lesson that can later be applied to the following year. Life is about trial and error and we are constantly learning. The same applies with growing. Whether it is your food, some flowers or just a majestic maple to add to your landscape, know that the only way to succeed is to start! Don’t let the fear of failure to stop you from connecting with your land.
